In addition to my studies, and my position as a Digitization Support Specialist (Student Assistant III) I understood how important it was to be involved with student organizations.  As an LIS student I held board member positions within two organizations since the beginning of my time in the program.  I actively participated in service projects with four of the five different student groups, as well as volunteered my time at a local public library branch.

American Library Association  - HI Student Chapter (ALAsc)

President
(Spring 2015 & Fall 2015)

I was elected president of the ALA student chapter for the Spring 2015 and Fall 2015 semesters.  In my role as President I planned numerous activities including professional development and brown bag seminars, pau hanas, service projects, and  executive and general meetings.  I regularly attended faculty meetings, and successfully integrated myself within the LIS department so that I was better able to serve the ALAsc members, and aid the LIS student body as a whole.

Some of the major events that were held during my Presidency are:

  • So You Want to Make a Poster? (October 2015)
    • LIS students are encouraged to create professional posters both for their classes and for the 2015 Fall HLA/HASL Conference.  This presentation was created to help students understand what a professional poster is and how they are created.  It was meant to demystify the notion of poster making being an enormously daunting task.  Students were given an informative presentation, that included dos and don'ts for making a poster.
  • Conferences!  What to Expect When You're Attending! (May 2015)
    • This brown bag panel event was held in response to a student asking me what they were in for at ALA 2015.  In attendance were Dr. Violet Harada (Professor Emeritus, UH Mānoa), Annie Thomas and Kara Plamann-Wagoner of Kapiʻolani Community College's Lama Library, as well as a current LIS student Meera Garud.  Panelists spoke about their experiences at local and national conferences, and answered any/all questions that students had.
  • Celebrating World Poetry, with Beer! (March 2015)
    • This was a poetry reading/creation session and beer tasting done in conjunction with the 2015 World Poetry Day.  There were samples of beer from 5 distinct regions in the world, each was accompanied by a tasting sheet.  For activities we had a spine poetry booth, and a poetry selection table.
  • Preservation Help at Hamilton Library (February 2015)
    • This limited seating service project had 8 ALAsc members working with Deborah Dunn, a Preservation Specialist at Hamilton Library.  Students received training and hands-on experience in how to handle well-aged materials, and how to remove harmful pieces (bookplates, bar codes, envelopes) from them.

Hui Dui

Secretary

(Fall 2014 & Spring 2015)

I was elected as the Hui Dui secretary for Fall 2014, and Spring 2015.  As a board member of the primary LIS student group I assisted in a broad variety of tasks.  I oversaw the LIS student diner, which is the primary fundraising source for the LIS Grad Dinner.  I also collaborated with other board members to plan and execute Grad Dinner from the ground up.  This included scouting locations, planning menus, budgeting for meals, coordinating with other student groups, and physically running the event.

Some major events that I participated in are:

  • Spring Graduation Dinner (May 2015)
    • Dinner was held at EAT Honolulu.  I assisted in all functions of the evening, as well as served as a liaison between all of the student groups that were participating.
  • Community Library Day (April 2015)
    • We actively participated in the Special Library Association -  Hawaiʻi Chapter's 2015 Community Library Day to help bring awareness of libraries in different communities across the island of Oahu.
  • Fall Graduation Dinner (December 2015)
    • Dinner was held at the Waioli Tea Room.  I assisted in all functions of the evening, especially in set up, take down, and handling all monies.
  • Operation Christmas Child (November 2015)
    • Collected donations to make Christmas boxes for underprivileged children on Oahu.  We aimed to make 7 boxes, and had enough donations to make 14, enabling us to brighten the lives of children on Christmas Day.

  • Ulu'ulu Moving Image Archives Service Project (April 2015)
    • As a member of NHIL I assisted in the removal and relocation of a large portion of materials from the Ulu'ulu Moving Image Archives' storage area in anticipation of their new movable storage being installed.  This gave me a unique opportunity to see a facility that I had not yet had the opportunity to visit.
  • Guided tour of the William S Richardson Law Library (March 2015)
  • 2nd annual Ho'okele Na'auao: A Hawaiian Librarianship Symposium (October 2014)
    • This was on of the first events that I attended as an LIS student.  It was eye-opening, and awe-inspiring.  It enabled me a chance to hear many amazing Hawaiian librarians speak, as well as to further understand what it is to be a librarian in Hawaiʻi.

Society of American Archivists Student Chapter (SAAsc)

(Member)

  • Saint Michael's Church Archives (April 2015)
    • This limited-seating service project allowed me to work with Stuart Ching of the Sacred Hearts Academy.  Students  helped to clean a large portion of materials that were donated to the Archives from a sister church in New England.
  • Brown Bag: Archives in the 21st Century: Addressing the elephant in the Room (April 2015)
    • This lecture was given by Adam Jansen of the Archives department at Hamilton Library.  It stressed the importance of digitization, as well as the downfall of the archives in a digitized world.
  • Brown Bag: Discussing Professional Memberships (March 2015)
    • This was an informal round table discussion with Malia Van Heukelem, the President of the Association of Hawaiʻi Archivists (AHA).  She discussed with us the importance of networking, and how to prepare for our futures as up and coming librarians.  My membership in AHA was a direct result of this discussion.
